Trump to Netanyahu: “I Call the Shots”

1) Trump Asserts Dominance Over Israel
In a surprise move, and before the current round of missile strikes, the US Department of Defence raised its counter-intelligence threat level for Israel, due to concerns around Israel spying on the US-Iran talks.
The New York Times reports 6th June 2026:
Al-Jazeera followed the news.
And, in a sign that confirms the strong signal being sent by the Americans, Fox News also followed up by hosting Vice President JD Vance, of all people, to speak to the matter.

Fox News host: “How concerned are you about Israel spying on the United States and freelancing in Lebanon?”
US Vice President JD Vance: “Well, look, I think obviously the Israelis and I, excuse me, the Israelis in the United States, we have a lot of shared interests, but we also have some situations where our interests diverge. And I think where the president has been very clear here is that while Israel obviously has some objectives that it has, the United States’ main objective in Iran is to ensure that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon. And we’ve actually, thanks to what’s happened over the last few months, but really over the last year and a half, we’ve created the space necessary where the president believes, and I think that he’s right, that we can get a long term settlement to Iran’s nuclear deal. Now, Israel may like that, they may not like that, but fundamentally we think this is in the best interests of the United States of America so we’re gonna keep on pursuing it because that’s what the president of the United States was elected to do, that’s what we have to do in order to properly serve the American people.”
Fox News host: “Do you think the Iranians are trying to play us at the negotiating table?”
US Vice President JD Vance: “Well, I think, Jesse, everybody’s always trying to play everybody. I think the president’s attitude on this is we have to verify, of course. One of the most important things to whether this ultimate settlement is a success, is not what the Iranians write on the paper, but whether they actually comply with some of thee requirements of the settlement that we come up to. I think it’s very important that this is one of the big differences. You always here people talk about the Obama deal and what went wrong with it. The number one thing that went wrong with the Obama deal Jesse is: there was not a proper inspections regime to ensure that the Iranians could never build a nuclear weapon. And that’s one of the big differences between what happened then and what the president of the United States would get to, assuming we’re ultimately able to make a deal. So I don’t assume that anybody’s acting in good faith. Obviously we’ve been very involved in these negotiations, Jesse. We’re gonna take the attitude of ‘accomplish the president’s mission, but verify over the long term that the Iranians are keeping their end of the bargain’. It’s a tall order, but it’s one that the president has put us in a good position to achieve. Because let’s be honest, Jesse, the Iranians don’t want this war to continue. It’s not in their best interest. And I think they’re coming to the table, putting some real things on the table. We’re of course going to verify it. But if we get to this deal, it’s going to be a home run win for the American people.”
Vance must, after all, do as he is told by his boss the president.
Following this news, the latest round of missile strikes were exchanged between Iran and Israel, over the Lebanon issue, but once again President Trump wasted no time in telegraphing to the world where US policy has settled, declaring to Axios reporter Barak Ravid that it is indeed Trump who is in charge, not Israel.
Axios reports 7th June 2026:
“President Trump called on Israel and Iran to ‘immediately stop shooting’ in a post on Truth Social on Monday.
Why it matters: The war between Israel and Iran resumed on Sunday after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defied Trump’s request to stand down. Israel struck Tehran and other cities after Iran launched missiles toward Israel.”
Trump even went out internationally to London’s Financial Times making it clear that Netanyahu and Israel would have no choice but to accept his eventual, and soon to be finalised, peace deal with Iran.

Interestingly, it looks like Trump’s public posturing worked.
Axios’ Barak Ravid again reports:
Taken together, these signals leave little doubt that a final peace deal is within reach, and is likely to be confirmed before the US mid-term elections.

President Trump exclaimed, it says, in an interview with the FT on Sunday, ‘I call the shots. I call all the shots. Netanyahu doesn’t call the shots. US president’s frustration with continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Iran erupts as he pushes to end the war.’ There is the Financial Times headline. Trump says Netanyahu will have no choice but to accept a deal with Iran. You can see it in big bold writing there on your screens. We’re just going to enlarge that for you so you can get your fair share of it. But it is in unequivocal terms exclusively to the London Financial Times. Trump says Netanyahu will have no choice but to accept a deal This is Trump calling the shots. This is Trump establishing dominance. This is Trump signalling through his administration that peace in the Middle East will be negotiated on American terms and that there is no two ways about it.”
2) Trump Asserts Dominance Over Iran
It is not only Israel over whom President Trump has asserted dominance. Trump has sent strong signals putting the Iranian theocracy in its place too.
This is despite having praised as ‘rational’ Iran’s third-incarnation of a decapitated leadership, indicating that if they wish to settle terms then they must act so.

Host: “You just referenced the 13 Americans who were killed. And I want to know what your red line is. What would trigger you to restart military action? Would it be Iran killing more American citizens?”
President Trump: “Well, certainly that would be something that I would think about very seriously. But my red line would be if I think I wasn’t going to make a deal or if I wasn’t going to make a deal fast enough. So we’re having very good negotiations with the people that are leading the country now. It’s the third group that we’ve been dealing with and they are different. And you could say it’s regime change actually because these are very different people. I’ve found them to be more rational. Very smart”
Host: “Who is that? Who is leading the country?”
President Trump: “Well, I don’t wanna give names. But you know who they are. They’re leaders. They’re respected. Respected by the people that have to respect them. They are calling the shots. We know that because we see it through various tests that we’ve given.”
This carrot and stick approach adopted by Trump invariably leads to a deal that has most likely been, primarily, already agreed.

President Trump: “They’ve been largely decapitated and I call it a military exercise because people would rather have it called that. It’s not a big war for us. It’s not the most powerful military in the world. I built it, frankly. I built it in my first four years and I’m using it a little bit in my second four years. Their navy is gone. Their air force is gone. Their anti-aircraft is gone. They might have built it up a little bit over the last four weeks of during this little ceasefire. That we did at the request of some very good people, very, very fine people, actually from numerous places, as you know. You know, there are a lot of people involved, but from Pakistan in particular, the Field Marshal and the Prime Minister. And we’re very close to having a deal, and if we don’t have a deal, we’ll do it one way or the other, either way we win.”
3) Peace is Coming
Peace is near. Despite current strikes, it is likely that Trump will have a deal with Iran before he goes into the mid-terms.
