US Elections: What Does Trump’s Selection for Vice President J.D. Vance Believe?

1) Trump’s VP pick was a Never Trumper

The next American President Donald Trump has selected the author of Hillbilly Elegy, Republican Senator J.D. Vance as his Vice President choice.

AP reports 16th July 2024:

“Trump’s vice-presidential pick is arguably the most important decision of his 2024 campaign. Vance, who is literally half the 78-year-old Trump’s age, and has the least political experience on a short list that included Rubio and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.”

Those further to the right of Trump’s MAGA base have already decided that they do not trust Senator Vance because he used to be ‘Never Trump’.

“..the elites were right about Donald Trump, right? I'm a never Trump guy. I never liked him / He's the best president of my lifetime and he revealed the corruption in this country like nobody else / I can't stomach Trump / I think that he's noxious and is leading the white working class to a very dark place / I think that he was a good president. I think he made a lot of good decisions for people / I think you're not a Trump supporter from what I've read. Am I right? Is that a fair assessment? / Yeah. Yeah. I didn't vote for Trump / All around, he was a great president. I'm 37 years old. Certainly the best president of my lifetime.”

Agreed caution is needed. This is elaborated further below. But to dismiss Vance outright due to his previous views on Trump is an uncharitable view that does not allow for the - only 40 years old - Senator Vance to have evolved in his view of the world.

2) Vance is anti-Ukraine war

With Trump’s appointment of Vance as his Vice President, a negotiated peace with Russia over Ukraine so as to avert the outbreak of WWIII - Foreign Policy, appears firmly to be Trump’s priority over other immediate concerns. Here is Vance’s anti war stance on the Ukraine conflict:

Senator Vance: “What the president did is completely disgraceful. If he wants to sell the American people on $60B more to Ukraine, he shouldn’t use dead Israeli children to do it. It was disgusting.”

Here is Vance on Steve Bannon’s War Room stating that he does not care for the war in Ukraine.

Senator Vance: “I gotta be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or the other.”

Vance believes in a negotiated settlement to the war:

Senator Vance: “On the Ukraine question in particular, everyone with a brain in their head knows that this is going to end with negotiations… Ukraine is functionally destroyed as a country…Our Ukraine policy is unsustainable. The average age of a soldier in their army is 43, older than me. No one can articulate what $61 billion will accomplish, so we need to be pushing a negotiated end to the war.”

3) Vance is pro-Israeli regime

Critics have rightly raised concerns around Vance’s - seemingly Likudnik - hawkish stance in favour of Israel and against Iran and China.

Here is a Fox News interview in which Senator Vance uses Netanyahu’s Likudnik propaganda tactic by redirecting legitimate concerns around Israeli war crimes in Gaza as solely and only being the responsibility of Hamas.

Fox News reports:

Vance would do well to remember that such legitimate concerns have even been raised by Israel’s own former war cabinet.

The Radical Dispatch reports 12th June 2024:

But as Vice-President, Senator Vance will not be setting US foreign policy. His purpose will be to sell it. Not set it.

If Trump as President achieves peace with Russia in Ukraine and the Middle East, this is unlikely to be followed by war with China, as war with China would likely lead to World War III anyway.

As for Israel, Trump will most likely address that file himself.

4) Vance is anti-Iranian regime

Vance adopts a hawkish position on Iran in one of his first major speeches since the appointment. This is unoriginal Republican orthodoxy. Though again, the Vice President is unlikely to determine foreign policy, only sell it. Any eventual Trump-negotiated peace with Russia is unlikely to allow for direct war with Putin’s closest Middle East ally Iran, as the previous case of Syria highlights.

Fox News reports 16th July 2024:

Senator Vance: "A lot of people recognize that we need to do something with Iran—but not these weak little bombing runs. If you're going to punch the Iranians, you punch them hard.”

In this vein, Vance has taken a shot at the UK Labour party for being too pro-Islamist and hence, we assume, too pro-Iran.

Senator Vance: “What is the first truly Islamist country to get a nuclear weapon? And we were like, maybe it's Iran, maybe Pakistan already kind of counts. And then we finally decided maybe it's actually the UK since Labour took over."

In the above interview with Fox News, Vance does as least mention resurrecting the Abraham Accords as a framework for peace in the Middle East.

Vance’s suggestion of resurrecting these Abraham Accords is worth keeping an eye on.

5) Vance was anti vaccine-mandate

Vance did at least stand against against vaccine mandates:

Senator Vance: “What is my position on mandates Covid vaccines? look I’m against it. It’s very simple. I think at the end of the day we should not be requiring people to take the vaccine”

Contrary to online rumours, some resurrected old tweets of his do not disprove the above. Those who read the tweets below slowly will see that Vance is clearly being sarcastic here ie: ‘let’s save hospitals by sacking nurses, that’ll help!’

6) Vance and Peter Thiel super-pac funding

Beyond his own stances, Vance does have uncomfortable connections to the dark money of Paypal founder Peter Theil.

Politico reports 5th March 2022:

“Tech billionaire Peter Thiel had already donated a record-breaking amount of money to support J.D. Vance in the Ohio Republican Senate primary — but last week, the Silicon Valley tycoon decided he wanted to give even more…Thiel had given $15 million in total to bolster Vance — the largest amount ever given to boost a single Senate candidate..

…But Vance — like many of Thiel’s venture capital investments — took an unusual path to the top, one aimed specifically at helping him win former President Donald Trump’s endorsement and then, in turn, the nomination.

While Vance’s rivals took the conventional route and funneled millions of dollars into TV commercials, Vance mostly outsourced his advertising to the Thiel-funded super PAC, instead focusing on winning free media attention from conservative outlets.

And while his rivals relentlessly pursued Trump’s all-important endorsement with repeated trips to the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate, Vance kept his distance after an early meeting — and ultimately won over the image-focused Trump anyway..”

Peter Thiel is the founder of AI data spyware firm Palantir. Yes, that is named after the Palantiri spy stones in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings where Saruman uses the Orthanc-stone to commune with the evil Sauron, who had the Ithil-stone.

There are major concerns around Peter Thiel’s AI software Palantir using AI to target Palestinians for military strikes in Israel’s war on Gaza.

Bloomberg reports 12th January 2024:

“Palantir Technologies Inc., the data analysis firm that provides militaries with artificial intelligence models, has agreed to a strategic partnership with the Israeli Defense Ministry to supply technology to help the country’s war effort.”

With Peter Thiel’s heavy involvement in domestic US politics (and via contracting countries such as the UK) it remains to be seen whether the very same AI software at Palantir Technologies is being used to strategise in elections via Thiel’s superpacs.

Peter Thiel is also a confirmed and known former associate of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
